ABOUT

OVERVIEW

Launched in 2012, Horizon Education Alliance (HEA) is a non-profit organization created by education, business, and community leaders in Elkhart County, Ind.

HEA is building a system for providing world-class education and training to every person in Elkhart County and across northern Indiana to equip them for a lifetime of well-being and meaningful work. Everyone here will have the practical, emotional, and social skills to thrive as the nature of work changes.

We engage people in region-wide, hands-on collaboration and connection to drive bold innovation and big outcomes — cultivating a shared sense of ownership and responsibility for our future.

Together, we’re doing it right: We’re using data to build deep understanding of what works, sharing the learning, and replicating successes across northern Indiana.

OUR GOALS

Each child is socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically ready for success in kindergarten by age 5.

All children are prepared with the academic and 21st-century skills needed for success in high school (and beyond) by the end of 8th grade.

All students will graduate from high school and attain a post-secondary credential or degree within six years of high school graduation.

Northern Indiana has a creative, educated, and skilled workforce.

Northern Indiana has a culture of lifelong learning.

Each child has a parent/ caregiver engaged in their learning journey.

HEA is building a system across our close-knit communities for the betterment of the whole region, with the shared belief that education is the key to unlocking the potential of all our people.

OUR HISTORY

HEA emerged from a history of community conversations around how to prepare our county for the future. It all started in 2002 with the Horizon Project community initiative.

In 2009, the Great Recession left more than 18% of Elkhart County unemployed, making it one of the hardest-hit areas in the country.

In response, 200 community leaders came together to strengthen our county by building a coordinated system of world-class training and education.

In 2012, we launched HEA, and now have public school superintendents, local business leaders, and other community leaders on our board.
