Triple P — Positive Parenting Program — is a curriculum of support developed over the last three decades and implemented in communities across the world, in dozens of languages.

THE CHALLENGE

The quality of parenting a child receives has profound effects on their life outcomes, social mobility, opportunity, and equality in our society. Access to parent support is not available to all, and there is often a stigma attached to those seeking help (“does this mean I’m a bad parent?” etc.).

In a 2016 survey conducted by HEA, of 1,000 Elkhart County parents, 58% were unaware of the parenting resources available in Elkhart County. Only 10% said they were satisfied with the parenting resources available to them.

THE SOLUTION

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is a parenting and family support system designed to prevent – as well as treat – behavioral and emotional problems in children and teenagers. It aims to prevent problems in the family, school and community before they arise and to create family environments that encourage children to realize their potential.

TRIPLE P IS FOR ALL PARENTS

Triple P programs in Elkhart County are:

  • Available at low cost or no cost for most interventions
  • Provided in either English or Spanish
  • Available across Elkhart County
  • Presented both in person or virtually, depending on what parents need

Triple P draws on social learning, cognitive behavioral and developmental theory as well as research into risk factors associated with the development of social and behavioral problems in children. It aims to equip parents with the skills and confidence they need to be self-sufficient and to be able to manage family issues without ongoing support.

And while it is almost universally successful in improving behavioral problems, more than half of Triple P’s 17 parenting strategies focus on developing positive relationships, attitudes, and conduct.

If you are interested in being trained as a Triple P practitioner or bringing Triple P support to your business or organization, please contact us at info@triplepelkhartcounty.org.

FIRST FIVE YEARS OF TRIPLE P IN ELKHART COUNTY

On December 15, 2020, Triple P in Elkhart County released a report about the first five years of implementing the Positive Parenting Program in the community.

In the report, available to view and download as a PDF on this page, we tell the story of why we chose to bring Triple P to Elkhart County, who we partnered with to make it happen, and how our implementers work to support parents and caregivers of children in schools, churches, daycare centers, nonprofit agencies, local businesses, libraries, and elsewhere.

We also share key data about the positive outcomes we’ve seen with the families our Triple P practitioners work alongside and share some of those families’ stories of growth and learning.

You can also read, download, or print the report plus a 2-page Impact Highlights document (available in English and in Spanish). You may also watch the recording of our Five Year celebration virtual gathering on YouTube.

If you have any questions about Triple P in Elkhart County or the report, please feel free to contact us at info@triplepelkhartcounty.org.

Levels of support to meet all parents’ needs

From advertisements that remind parents that they’re not alone to 90-minute seminar sessions that introduce Positive Parenting strategies, the lower levels of Triple P’s “pyramid” of support offer a lighter touch of programming for parents that may be curious about how Positive Parenting works, or have one particular parenting challenge in mind to address.

Triple P in Elkhart County has weekly videos on common parenting issues on its Facebook page, and many of those videos are also available for free any time at its YouTube channel (many are available in Spanish, as well). If a parent or caregiver of children is interested in further support, they can go to ElkhartCountyParents.org at any time to register for upcoming one-time seminars or discussion groups or find downloadable materials with explanations of common Positive Parenting strategies.

For parents who would like to expand their parenting skills toolbox beyond a single topic here and there, Triple P offers longer-term, more in-depth interventions.

Triple P Standard is delivered one-on-one over the course of several weeks with a trained practitioner, building knowledge of Positive Parenting principles, then applying those principles to a wide range of parental situations. Group Triple P is delivered over eight weeks as a combination of group classroom-style workshops and one-on-one support to encourage you as you apply strategies to build positive behaviors in the home.

As with all Triple P interventions, most programming in Elkhart County is available in English and Spanish. If you are interested in learning more about in-depth Triple P support, please feel free to call us at 574-226-0160.

Triple P is delivered to parents of children up to 12 years, with Teen Triple P for parents of 12 to 16 year olds. There are also specialist programs including Stepping Stones Triple P for parents of children who have a developmental disability, Family Transitions for parents going through separation or divorce, and Group Triple P, which goes more in-depth on parenting support over eight weeks of sessions.

Some unique variants of Triple P are that support is offered in group settings, one-on-one or virtually and it has varying levels of support — from brief to in-depth — to meet all parents’ needs.
